Area information
The Aghios Nikolaos region, where the resort is situated, is on the north-east coast of the island overlooking the beautiful gulf of Mirabello. Behind the Blue Flag-awarded beach lies Playiada, a Greek village square covered by a wooden pergola. A variety of boutiques, as well as an art gallery and souvenir shop, are to be found here, not to mention the lovely Chapel of Prophet Elias. Approximately 2 km from the hotel is the picturesque fishing village of Elounda, with its small harbour surrounded by shops, taverns and cafes. Aghios Nikolaos, 9 km from Elounda village, is a small yet lively town with a harbour connected to the Voulismeni lagoon, a traditional shelter for small fishing vessels surrounded by lively cafes and taverns.
On the islet of Spinalonga, opposite the small village of Plaka with its lovely pebble beaches, is a seemingly impregnable castle. On the Spinalonga peninsula is the ancient town of Olous where snorkelers and divers can discover the submerged ruins of an ancient city destroyed by a cataclysmic earthquake.
A must is of course Knossos, Crete's most important ancient palace around which the Minoan civilisation grew and prospered. The Iraklion Archaeological Museum houses a stunning collection of Minoan jewellery and artwork including the original frescoes from Knossos.
