The Plateau of the Windmills of Crete
In Crete the energy of the strong Greek wind is utilized on the Lasithi plateau in order to extract the abundant water from the underground.
There are thousands of windmills and some of them are still operating, with the farmer at work in the nearby field. Most of them are just abandoned skeletons, except for those that are now big signs for some restaurant and the few still active.
You can enjoy the complete view of the plateau reaching Psyhro and from there going to the caves of Dikteon, with a truly extraordinary landscape.
In this area there are many small villages that the mass tourism has not yet contaminated, with few restaurants and two or three souvenir shops.
