How to get around in Crete

Tourism has positively affected the development of the road network in Crete: a new highway goes across the island on its north side, joining the major cities (the capital Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno) and it is distinct from the old coastal road thanks to signs in English indicating the New Road and Old Road respectively.
The other roads are well maintained and it is now quite rare to find dirt roads.
The only problem is the lack of barriers, especially in the mountains or when the route passes over a high cliff. In case of strong wind (very common in July) it can create some difficulties to motorcycles and big campers.
The signs on the minor roads are sometimes given only in Greek characters but soon you learn to decipher them; it is better not to completely trust the given distances, which are sometimes only a general reference. Please fill up the tank in advance because outside the city service stations are rare.
